Download PDF Champion Buffalo Hunter Book by Jeanette Prodgers Full eBook and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2008-11-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Champion Buffalo Hunter is the fascinating memoir of one of the most legendary frontiersmen of the early West, “Yellowstone Vic” Smith. Born Victor Grant Smith in 1850, he lived a colorful life across the American frontier from the 1870s to 1890s. A classic frontiersman, he was a trapper, dispatch rider, scout, trick shot—and, yes, buffalo hunter extraordinaire. Discovered in Harvard University's Houghton Library in 1990, this remarkable autobiography—which Smith wrote in the third person—is comparable to Andrew Garcia's Tough Trip through Paradise, but, notes the editor, “without the melodrama.” Written in a matter-of-fact, often humorous style, it will engage and entertain all those interested in the lives and times of the men who wandered the West, following the great herds and settling only long enough for the snows to melt. This new edition includes a revised and updated foreword by Jeanette Prodgers based on new research into the life of Yellowstone Vic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Golden Age of Fraternity was a unique time in American history. In the forty years between the Civil War and the onset of World War I, more than half of all Americans participated in clubs, fraternities, militias, and mutual benefit societies. Today this period is held up as a model for how we might revitalize contemporary civil society. But was America's associational culture really as communal as has been assumed? What if these much-admired voluntary organizations served parochial concerns rather than the common good? Jason Kaufman sets out to dispel many of the myths about the supposed civic-mindedness of "joining" while bringing to light the hidden lessons of associationalism's history. Relying on deep archival research in city directories, club histories, and membership lists, Kaufman shows that organizational activity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries revolved largely around economic self-interest rather than civic engagement. And far from spurring concern for the collective good, fraternal societies, able to pick and choose members at will, fostered exclusion and further exacerbated the competitive interests of a society divided by race, class, ethnicity, and religion. Tracing both the rise and the decline of American associational life - a decline that began immediately after World War I, much earlier than previously thought - Kaufman argues persuasively that the end of fraternalism was a good thing. Illuminating both broad historical shifts - immigration, urbanization, and the disruptions of war, among them - and smaller, overlooked contours, such as changes in the burial and life insurance industries, Kaufman has written a bracing revisionist history. Eloquently rebutting those hailing America's associational past and calling for a return to old-style voluntarism, For the Common Good? will change the terms of debate about the history - and the future - of American civil society."--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Bringing together scholarship in diverse fields - including architecture, geography, folklore, anthropology, and urban studies - the seventeen essays in this volume confirm the transformations now occurring in the study of vernacular architecture. Moving away from a single vision of vernacular architecture that consisted only of old, rural, handmade structures built in traditional forms and materials for everyday use, scholars are exploring a wider variety of forms and landscapes - from company towns to grand expositions. Drawn from two conferences of the Vernacular Architecture Forum - one held in Charleston in 1994, the other in Ottawa in 1995 - these essays address a broad range of topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early formation of barnstorming teams that toured the state to the moment Dave Winfield hit number three thousand, Minnesota's African American ball players have made the state a land of baseball. However, the stories of many black players parallel the larger struggle for civil rights. Those tales, collected here for the first time, show how teamwork on and off the field led first to acceptance, then to admiration and triumph. Swinging for the Fences is the first collection to highlight the thrilling and controversial landmarks in the history of black baseball in the North Star State. Award-winning author Steven R. Hoffbeck assembled a stellar team of writers--and baseball fanatics--to tell the great stories of black baseball's past, from establishment of the color lines to dazzling hits by black heroes that led the Twins to victory over the Cardinals in '87. Each chapter focuses on one key player, and through these windows into their lives and livelihoods, their plays and passions, readers get an intimate look at the national pastime as it has evolved over the last century and more. Featured here are Hall of Famers like Willie Mays, Roy Campanella, and Kirby Puckett and great players like Walter Ball, John Wesley Donaldson, and Bud Fowler, who, because of their race, never made the stats books. These are stories of the bonds that formed between players, of legendary moments in baseball's past, and of real people whose love of the game kept them playing against tough odds.

Download PDF Pioneer Photographers from the Mississippi to the Continental Divide Book by Peter E. Palmquist Full eBook and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biographical dictionary of some 3,000 photographers (and workers in related trades), active in a vast area of North America before 1866, is based on extensive research and enhanced by some 240 illustrations, most of which are published here for the first time. The territory covered extends from central Canada through Mexico and includes the United States from the Mississippi River west to, but not including, the Rocky Mountain states. Together, this volume and its predecessor, Pioneer Photographers of the Far West: A Biographical Dictionary, 1840-1865, comprise an exhaustive survey of early photographers in North America and Central America, excluding the eastern United States and eastern Canada. This work is distinguished by the large number of entries, by the appealing narratives that cover both professional and private lives of the subjects, and by the painstaking documentation. It will be an essential reference work for historians, libraries, and museums, as well as for collectors of and dealers in early American photography. In addition to photographers, the book includes photographic printers, retouchers, and colorists, and manufacturers and sellers of photographic apparatus and stock. Because creators of moving panoramas and optical amusements such as dioramas and magic lantern performances often fashioned their works after photographs, the people behind those exhibitions are also discussed.

Download PDF More Lasting Than Brass Book by Peter H. Judd Full eBook and published by UPNE. This book was released on 2004 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Haring Judd draws on a treasure trove of letters, photographs, and genealogical records to present the rich and colorful stories of members of the Haring, Herring, Clark, Denton, Phelps, White, Griggs, and Judd families, placing the individuals within the context of the social, economic, and historical forces that shaped their lives, as well as the regions and places where they resided and worked. Judd follows the thread of the family's fortunes and misfortunes from people born under the British flag in New York City and the Hudson River Valley to their twentieth-century descendants in industrial Connecticut. The voices of these families reflect a wide range of experiences in a changing American landscape. Earlier generations participated in momentous events of the Revolution, were heirs of the early republic's expanding society and economy, and engaged in the northern campaign at Lake Ontario in the War of 1812. They were among the citizens who seized the opportunities afforded by access to former Indian lands in frontier New York and further west, and by a thriving commercial trade stimulated by steady improvements in transportation. Later generations carry the narrative to Minneapolis and then to Waterbury, Connecticut, where family members were part of the rise and fall of the once dynamic and bustling manufacturing center. More Lasting than Brass also tells a human story, one that reveals men and women responding to surroundings and circumstances, marrying, divorcing, raising families, coping with illnesses, choosing paths to pursue, completing ventures, or having them cut short by mortality. In this distinctive volume, Judd skillfully joins history and genealogy to re-create and illuminate the whole lives of individual family members against the backdrop of their times. Co-published with Newbury Street Press, imprint of the New England Historic Genealogical Society
