Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1930 as the result of efforts by several black Catholic laywomen, Queen of Angels was the first African American Catholic congregation in Newark, New Jersey. The church quickly embarked on an outreach campaign that endured for decades and affected the entire Newark community - black and white, Catholic and Protestant. By the 1960's, many people looked to Queen of Angels as a model of social and civil rights activism. In A Mission for Justice, Mary Ward places Queen of Angles within its broader historical, religious, and social context and explores the church's struggle for justice within the Catholic Church and in society as a whole. The reach of Queen of Angels extended far beyond its own membership. For example, while riots erupted in other cities across the country after the murder of Martin Luther King Jr., Queen of Angels played an instrumental role in organizing the Walk for Understanding, a peaceful march of twenty-five thousand blacks and whites through the heart of the inner city. That event and the ethos that inspired it gave birth to the New Community Corporation, the largest nonprofit housing corporation in the country, led by former Queen of Angels priest, William Linder. Today, Queen of Angels is one of several African American Catholic parishes in Newark, and its mission is now more pastoral than activist. But the church continues as a home to various community based programs working to improve the lives of Newark's residents. Based on nine years of research, A Mission for Justice draws on oral histories of parishioners, pastors, nuns, and layworkers at Queen of Angels as well as on documents from various private collections. Ward's study will be valuable reading for those interested in African American and church history as well as the history of social activism and the Civil Rights Movement. The Author: Mary A. Ward is an adjunct professor of religion at Fordham University.

Download PDF Queer Angels in Post-1945 American Literature and Culture Book by David Deutsch Full eBook and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Allen Ginsberg's 'angel-headed hipsters' to angelic outlaws in Essex Hemphill's Conditions, angelic imagery is pervasive in queer American art and culture. This book examines how the period after 1945 expanded a unique mixture of sacred and profane angelic imagery in American literature and culture to fashion queer characters, primarily gay men, as embodiments of 'bad beatitudes'. Deutsch explores how authors across diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds, including John Rechy, Richard Bruce Nugent, Allen Ginsberg, and Rabih Alameddine, sought to find the sacred in the profane and the profane in the sacred. Exploring how these writers used the trope of angelic outlaws to celebrate men who rebelled wilfully and nobly against religious, medical, legal and social repression in American society, this book sheds new light on dissent and queer identities in postmodern American literature.

Book excerpt: On July 26, Arthur Gordon learns that Europa, the sixth moon of Jupiter, has disappeared. Not hiding, not turned black, but gone. On September 28th, Edward Shaw finds an error in the geological records of Death Valley. A cinder cone was left off the map. Could it be new? Or, stranger yet, could it be artificial? The answer may be lying beside it-a dying Guest who brings devastating news for Edward and for Planet Earth. As more unexplained phenomena spring up around the globe-a granite mountain appearing in Australia, sounds emanating from the earth's core, flashes of light among the asteroids-it becomes clear to some that the end is approaching, and there is nothing we can do. Facing the destruction of all they know, some people turn to God, others to their families, and a few turn to saviors promising escape from a planet being torn apart. Will they make it in time? And who gets left behind to experience the last moments of beauty and chaos on earth?

Book excerpt: In this sequel to EON, Greg Bear continues to explore the possibilities presented by the asteroid Thistledown, a remnant of a lost human civilization. The Way is a tunnel through space and time that leads to other worlds, some more like planet Earth than Earth itself. It is perhaps the most formidable discovery in Thistledown and with it come disputes as to the nature of the Way and how it should be used. The Way can be reached only through Axis City, the only space station of Thistledown. The ruling body of Axis City, the Hexamon, has decreed that other worlds reached by The Way must be left untouched as an insurance against future needs of the human race. But then the Hexamon hear of a group of clandestine colonists who have settled on one of the new worlds. Olmy Ap Sennon is an eager young career soldier who must go and investigate this illegal colony, and at the same time confront his own humanity. As he witnesses the hardship and beauty of the outlaw human colony, he learns what it means to struggle with war, ecological disaster, love, and death.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of the greatest cyberpunk novels, Blood Music explores the imminent destruction of mankind and the fear of mass destruction by technological advancements. Blood Music follows present-day events in which the fears concerning the nuclear annihilation of the world subsided after the Cold War and the fear of chemical warfare spilled over into the empty void of nuclear fear. An amazing breakthrough in genetic engineering made by Vergil Ulam is considered too dangerous for further research, but rather than destroy his work, he injects himself with his creation and walks out of his lab, unaware of just quite how his actions will change the world. Author Greg Bear's treatment of the traditional tale of scientific hubris is both suspenseful and a compelling portrait of a new intelligence emerging amongst us, irrevocably changing our world.
