Book excerpt: The stories that inspired the film Colette, directed by Wash Westmoreland and starring Keira Knightley. Colette, prodded by her first husband, Willy, began her writing career with Claudine at School, which catapulted the young author into instant, sensational success. Among the most autobiographical of Colette's works, these four novels are dominated by the child-woman Claudine, whose strength, humor, and zest for living make her seem almost a symbol for the life force. Janet Flanner described these books as "amazing writing on the almost girlish search for the absolute of happiness in physical love . . . recorded by a literary brain always wide awake on the pillow."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parade's End is a tetralogy by Ford Madox. The four novels were originally published under the titles: Some Do Not ... (1924), No More Parades (1925), A Man Could Stand Up — (1926), and Last Post (or The Last Post in the USA) (1928). It is set mainly in England and on the Western Front in World War I, where Ford served as an officer in the Welsh Regiment, a life vividly depicted in the novels. The novels chronicle the life of Christopher Tietjens, a brilliant government statistician from a wealthy landowning family who is serving in the British Army during World War I. His wife Sylvia is a flippant socialite who seems intent on ruining him. Tietjens may or may not be the father of his wife's child. Meanwhile, his incipient affair with Valentine Wannop, a high-spirited pacifist and suffragette, has not been consummated, despite what all their friends believe. The two central novels follow Tietjens in the army in France and Belgium, as well as Sylvia and Valentine in their separate paths over the course of the war. Ford Madox Ford ( 1873 – 1939) was an English novelist, poet, critic and editor whose journals, The English Review and The Transatlantic Review, were instrumental in the development of early 20th-century English literature. He is now remembered best for his publications The Good Soldier, the Parade's End tetralogy and The Fifth Queen trilogy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Broadway audiences of the 1980s, the decade was perhaps most notable for the so-called “British invasion.” While concept musicals such as Nine and Stephen Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George continued to be produced, several London hits came to New York. In addition to shows like Chess, Me and My Girl, and Les Miserables, the decade’s most successful composer Andrew Lloyd Webber was also well represented by Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, Song & Dance, and Starlight Express. There were also many revivals (such as Show Boat and Gypsy), surprise hits (The Pirates of Penzance), huge hits (42nd Street), and notorious flops (Into the Light, Carrie, and Annie 2: Miss Hannigan's Revenge). In The Complete Book of 1980s Broadway Musicals, Dan Dietz examines in detail every musical that opened on Broadway during the 1980s. In addition to including every hit and flop that debuted during the decade, this book highlights revivals and personal-appearance revues with such performers as Sid Caesar, Barry Manilow, Jackie Mason, and Shirley MacLaine. Each entry includes the following information Opening and closing dates Plot summaries Cast members Number of performances Names of all important personnel including writers, composers, directors, choreographers, producers, and musical directors Musical numbers and the names of performers who introduced the songs Production data, including information about tryouts Source material Critical commentary Tony awards and nominations Details about London and other foreign productions Besides separate entries for each production, the book offers numerous appendixes, including a discography, filmography, and published scripts, as well as lists of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, black-themed shows, and Jewish-themed productions. A treasure trove of information, The Complete Book of 1980s Broadway Musicals provides readers with a comprehensive view of each show. This significant resource will be of use to scholars, historians, and casual fans of one of the greatest decades in musical theatre history.

Download PDF Lesbian Decadence Book by Nicole G. Albert Full eBook and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-23 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1857 the French poet Charles Baudelaire, who was fascinated by lesbianism, created a scandal with Les Fleurs du Mal [The Flowers of Evil]. This collection was originally entitled "The Lesbians" and described women as "femmes damnées," with "disordered souls" suffering in a hypocritical world. Then twenty years later, lesbians in Paris dared to flaunt themselves in that extraordinarily creative period at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries which became known as the Belle Époque. Lesbian Decadence, now available in English for the first time, provides a new analysis and synthesis of the depiction of lesbianism as a social phenomenon and a symptom of social malaise as well as a fantasy in that most vibrant place and period in history. In this newly translated work, praised by leading critics as "authoritative," "stunning," and "a marvel of elegance and erudition," Nicole G. Albert analyzes and synthesizes an engagingly rich sweep of historical representations of the lesbian mystique in art and literature. Albert contrasts these visions to moralists' abrupt condemnations of "the lesbian vice," as well as the newly emerging psychiatric establishment's medical fury and their obsession on cataloging and classifying symptoms of "inversion" or "perversion" in order to cure these "unbalanced creatures of love." Lesbian Decadence combines literary, artistic, and historical analysis of sources from the mainstream to the rare, from scholarly studies to popular culture. The English translation provides a core reference/text for those interested in the Decadent movement, in literary history, in French history and social history. It is well suited for courses in gender studies, women's studies, LGBT history, and lesbianism in literature, history, and art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These further six chapters of Jews in an Illusion of Paradise now focus on individual exemplary figures and clusters of poets, dramatists, critics, journalists, art historians—Jews whose achievements were once celebrated, but now are almost all but forgotten, not because of changes in aesthetic taste or style but because of social, political and other ideological issues. The book continues to examine the clash between their conscious and unconscious self-presentation as Jews in a culture that wilfully or inadvertently misunderstood or rejected this aspect of “otherness” the men and women represented from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. Whereas the first volume concentrated on the themes, images and rhetorical motifs of this awkward status of Jewish intellectuals and artists, here the ambiguous personalities and repressed anxieties of the exemplary figures are stressed. For millennia, Jews were considered outside of normal history, passive victims of persecution; then suddenly, with Emancipation, they fell into history and out of their mythical place in the scheme of things. Everything seemed to crumble into dust and ashes.

Book excerpt: Antonia White is best known for her masterpiece Frost in May, for having come back from Bedlam and madness, and for the public feud between her daughters over the editing of her diaries. This is the first biography to tell the complete story of a life courageously lived against most difficult odds: 'Oh I DID want to be happy as a woman...But I'm a monster and must accept being one. Not all writers are monsters. But my kind is.' With full access to White's unexpurgated diaries, the analysis journals, the asylum records and her voluminous correspondence, Jane Dunn has explored the woman and the writer, the persecutor and the victim. This biography charts Antonia White's ambivalence about her parents; her three marriages, two of them unconsummated; her lovers; her friendships with poets and writers like Cyril Connolly, Dylan Thomas and Bertrand Russell; her secret war work; her bizarre thraldom to 'dominating women'; her harrowing relationship with her two daughters; and her endurance of the ravages of manic depression, experienced without the benefits of modern day therapy. This is the story of a woman who - two generations too soon - attempted to live the modern female life of single parent and working mother, but longed for the artistic and intellectual stage. Antonia White wrestled throughout with the large questions of faith, the attractions and repulsions of Catholicism, the problems of being a woman and an artist. And over it all lowered the threat of madness. This book reveals her as a woman unafraid of extreme experience and honest enough to accept the consequences: self-obsessed, funny, fascinating and tragic - and ultimately heroic.

Book excerpt: "The Complete Works of Zacharias Tanee Fomum on Marriage" contains the following books: - Enjoying the Premarital Life - Enjoying the Choice of Your Marriage Partner - Enjoying the Married Life - A Successful Marriage: The Husband’s Making - A Successful Marriage: The Wife’s Making - Divorce and Remarriage - Revolutionary Thoughts of Marriage - Freedom from the Sin of Adultery and Fornication Life is meant to be enjoyed at every stage - premarital and marital. Marriage itself is meant by God to be heaven on earth. What you do before marriage determines whether your marriage will be heaven on earth or hell on earth. Someone has said that before marriage, your private parts are for urinating. It is only after marriage that they take the additional functions of facilitating sexual pleasure and reproduction. Watch out! The person you choose or accept as a marriage partner may make or mar God’s call on your life, build or bastardise your life and make you better or bitter in life. The choice is yours. Do not get married without having established your God-given goal, started pursuing it with rigour and vigour, and being desperately in need of a helper fit to help you in the accomplishment of that goal. The choice is also yours to make your marriage heaven on earth or hell on earth. If you and your partner make God an integral and indispensable part of your union, it will stand firm and free like a three-legged chair. If you remove God from it through unbelief, backsliding and lack of consecration, you make it a two-legged chair that cannot stand. A successful marriage is the making of both the husband and the wife. The husband makes it succeed by being unconditionally loving, responsible and protective of his wife. The wife, on her own part, makes it succeed by being unconditionally submissive, respectful and pleasing to her husband. When these simple principles are violated repeatedly over a sustained period of time, dissatisfaction and discontentment set in. These may lead to adultery, sexual perversion, divorce and many other terrible things. This volume shows you step by step how to prepare for marriage, marry, enjoy the married life and avoid the ambushes of marriage. It buttresses all these principles with sound testimonies of how things have worked out in the lives and marriages of many born-again people worldwide. Examples abound in this volume of how some peoples’ marriages are heaven on earth while others’ marriages are hell on earth. It’s all a matter of price paid and obedience to the Lord in His demands on one’s life. We send this first volume on marriage out with a cry to the Lord that, He should use it to produce stable marriages, stable homes, stable families and so stable churches in this perverse generation.
