Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stages of Literature The sorcerer dawned with skills of voodoo. The tarot card depicts the sorcerer from the voodoo stage, and he permeated into an image, with its symbols of the English court. The tragicomedy period (old English) dispelled the notion of the sorcerer being placed between us and our maker. Of course even without the sorcery, forces continued to defy logic. Properties of voodoo, through perspectives, were at the helm. Laws of force were soon accepted by the maturing world. Although these forces have constructs that are not visible, the effects were known to be very consistent. Testing such laws proved reliable to cause and effect. The age of reason brought wisdom, through retrospect, of how we react to the unknown and unexplained. We simply make up what we do not know. However, we do so by taking the perspectives we are granted and reasoning out the realities that lie within. With reality being created from our crooked and unaligned perspectives, our realities pale in comparison to Gods truths. The Romantic Period paired our realizations of reason and logic up against the phenomenon we call emotions. Emotions won hands down. Earlier chronicles of man demonstrate mystery, but the mystics are to the nth power within emotions. The day of the zodiac combines logics and emotions and is depicted by the symbols of civilization. Each past civilization will leave signs of what they most feared and what they most needed (adored). The interrelation of humans is controlled by the celestial constellations, aligning our compatibility to one another. It barely scratches the surface of why we are magnetized to some while we are polarized from others. Charms of Makings caused her end. Makings of charm will set and begin.

Book excerpt: One-eyed kings in the land of the blind, although seemingly unqualified and incapable, see something they could never realize with their natural vision. "You see," says Bill Wilson, "I believe my story continually lets people know that it's still about ordinary people doing extraordinary things. That's the definition of a one-eyed king. They are people who turn terrible tragedies and pain into amazingly productive lives that benefit many others. They are not trained. They are not qualified. They have their own sets of issues. Despite their shortcomings, the one-eyed kings are able to see just a little more than those around them. Then they do something about it." What is your story? Are you waiting to be qualified? To get it right? To be perfect? Are you waiting for something to happen that is worth telling? You already have a story! No one is qualified. Nobody is right all the time. Not one of us has reached perfection. It's your journey with and to God that will bless and encourage those in your path. Don't wait to get to your destination before telling others. God needs you now in all your imperfect glory...someone is waiting to hear.

Book excerpt: In this magical and epic novel, the celebrated author of Urban Cowboy delivers a Texas-size love story that transplants the legend of Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, and Merlin alive and well to the Old West -- to stunning effect. Code of the West begins when Jimmy Goodnight, a young, earnest cowhand, recovering from having been brutally abducted by Comanches who slaughtered his family, sets his life on a new and surprising course by visiting a county fair. There he agrees to try to pull out an ax that has been deeply imbedded in an anvil and that has defied the efforts of the strongest men in Texas. Jimmy's astonishing and triumphant achievement at the fair changes his life. With the prize money he follows his dream, recruits cowboys, puts together a herd of cattle, and drives them across the plains to a deep canyon, where he intends to make his own private kingdom. Goodnight's luck and courage bring him an early and gratifying success. Above all, they bring him the comradeship of his men, and the friendship of a lifetime, when he meets Jack Loving, who is everything Jimmy Goodnight isn't -- handsome, graceful, a naturally gifted horseman, and a great dancer. Together, Goodnight and Loving make a formidable team, and their relationship is one of complete trust, the bedrock on which Goodnight's growing empire rests, on a seemingly solid foundation -- until a woman appears with whom both men fall in love. All goes well until Goodnight makes a fearful, vengeful, and unforgiving enemy, takes on an Eastern big businessman as a partner -- and falls in love with his beautiful daughter Revelie, and fails to notice the growing mutual attraction bet-ween Revelie and Loving... Compulsively readable, cleverly interweaving Western history (Loving and Goodnight are both based on real people in the historical West) and Arthurian legend, Code of the West is a powerful love story, a sweeping adventure, a great "Western" -- and just the kind of unexpected, unusual, and hugely successful work of fiction that has sealed Aaron Latham's reputation.

Download PDF Writers of the Winter Republic Book by Youngju Ryu Full eBook and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1975, a young high school teacher took the stage at a prayer meeting in a southwestern Korean city to recite a poem called "The Winter Republic." The poem became an anthem against the military dictatorship of Park Chung Hee and his successors; the poet, however, soon found himself in court and then in prison for saddling the authoritarian state with such a memorable moniker. This unique book weaves together literary works, biographical accounts, institutional histories, trial transcripts, and personal interviews to tell the powerful story of how literature became a fierce battleground against authoritarian rule during one of the darkest periods in South Korea's history. Park Chung Hee's military dictatorship was a time of unparalleled political oppression. It was also a time of rapid and unprecedented economic development. Against this backdrop, Youngju Ryu charts the growing activism of Korean writers who interpreted literature's traditional autonomy as a clarion call to action, an imperative to intervene politically in the name of art. Each of the book's four chapters is devoted to a single writer and organized around a trope central to his work. Kim Chi-ha's "bandits," satirizing Park's dictatorship; Yi Mun-gu's "neighbor," evoking old nostalgia and new anxieties; Cho Se-hŭi's dwarf, representing the plight of the urban poor; and Hwang Sok-yong's labor fiction, the supposed herald of the proletarian revolution. Ending nearly two decades of an implicit ban on socially engaged writing, literature of the period became politicized not merely in content and form, but also as an institution. Writers of the Winter Republic emerged as the conscience of their troubled yet formative times. A question of politics lies at the heart of this book, which seeks to understand how and why a time of political oppression and censorship simultaneously expanded the practice and everyday relevance of literature. By animating the lives and works of the men who shaped this period, the book offers readers an illuminating literary, cultural, and political history of the era.

Book excerpt: Filled with information and lore, mappae mundi present an encyclopaedic panorama of the conceptual "landscape" of the middle ages. Previously objects of study for cartographers and geographers, the value of medieval maps to scholars in other fields is now recognised and this book, written from an art historical perspective, illuminates the medieval view of the world represented in a group of maps of c.1300. Naomi Kline's detailed examination of the literary, visual, oral and textual evidence of the Hereford mappa mundi and others like it, such as the Psalter Maps, the '"Sawley Map", and the Ebstorf Map, places them within the larger context of medieval art and intellectual history. The mappa mundi in Hereford cathedral is at the heart of this study: it has more than one thousand texts and images of geographical subjects, monuments, animals, plants, peoples, biblical sites and incidents, legendary material, historical information and much more; distinctions between "real" and "fantastic" are fluid; time and space are telescoped, presenting past, present, and future. Naomi Kline provides, for the first time, a full and detailed analysis of the images and texts of the Hereford map which, thus deciphered, allow comparison with related mappae mundi as well as with other texts and images. NAOMI REED KLINE is Professor of Art History at Plymouth State College.
